Can a personal trainer help you lose weight?
Training on its own rarely moves the scale much. A hard session burns a few hundred calories, and one restaurant meal can undo it. What a trainer actually does for weight loss is three other things:
- Keeps your muscle while you lose fat. Lose weight without lifting and a chunk of what comes off is muscle. You end up lighter and softer. Strength training tells your body to keep it.
- Makes the deficit hold. Not a crash diet, a deficit built from the food you already eat, small enough to keep for months.
- Reads the data. Weekly weigh-ins, measurements and photos, so a slow week gets diagnosed instead of panicked about.
How we coach fat loss
- Strength training, 2 to 5 times a week, coached 1-on-1 and progressed on a schedule.
- Nutrition around your real week: portions, protein targets and grocery habits. If you eat out on Fridays, the plan includes Fridays.
- Weekly check-ins in the coaching app: weight, measurements, photos.
- Adjustments based on trends, not on one bad morning on the scale.
Our nutrition coaching page goes deeper on the food side.
Belly fat: what a trainer can and cannot do
No exercise burns fat from one spot. Crunches build the muscle under the belly fat; they do not remove the fat on top of it. Belly fat comes off the same way all fat does: an overall deficit, held long enough, while strength training protects the muscle you have.
What a coach can do is make that process work and keep you in it through the weeks where the mirror does not seem to change. Waist measurements usually tell the story before the scale does, which is why we take them every week.
What we do not do
No crash diets, no detoxes, no 1,000 calorie meal plans. We are coaches, not a medical weight loss clinic. If you are using a GLP-1 medication like Ozempic, keep working with your doctor on that side; strength training matters even more while you are on it, because fast weight loss takes muscle with it unless you give your body a reason to keep it.
